A declaratory judgment is a court order that formally declares the rights and legal positions of the parties. It does not by itself award money or impose jail time. Instead, it clarifies whether conduct is lawful, which can shape later injunctions, settlements, or appeals. Litigants use declaratory relief when they need a judicial answer before harm becomes harder to undo.
