The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was established by the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, signed November 19, 2001, in response to the September 11 attacks. It federalized airport security screening, replacing a contractor-based system Congress found inadequate. TSA employs transportation security officers who complete specialized training in explosives detection, X-ray operation, and passenger screening. TSA operates under the Department of Homeland Security.
