Farm bill extended through FY2026 expires, leaving major agricultural and nutrition programs without authorization
The 2018 farm bill, extended three times since its 2023 expiration, runs out at the end of FY2026. The final extension covered FY2026 commodity programs and SNAP nutrition funding through September 30, 2026. Without a new farm bill, federal commodity support programs revert to outdated 1938 and 1949 permanent law provisions that would trigger dramatic and disruptive price supports. In March 2026, the House Agriculture Committee advanced the Farm, Food and National Security Act of 2026 on a 34-to-17 vote, but the bill remained controversial over SNAP cuts and pesticide liability protections. The Senate had not yet released its version as of May 2026.
