Supreme Court to Decide Whether Migrants Stopped in Mexico Can Claim Asylum in US
In a companion framing of the Noem v. Al Otro Lado case accepted November 17, the Supreme Court will examine whether asylum seekers physically stopped on the Mexican side of the border retain legal rights to claim asylum in the United States. The case arose from the Trump administration's "metering" policy that made migrants wait in Mexico before being admitted to US ports of entry to make asylum claims, leaving thousands stranded in dangerous conditions in Mexican border cities.
