Supreme Court rejects undergraduate admissions points system in Gratz

The Supreme Court rules in Gratz v. Bollinger on June 23, 2003, striking down the University of Michigan undergraduate admissions policy that awarded automatic points to underrepresented minority applicants. The Court distinguishes the point system from the individualized law school review upheld the same day in Grutter. It says the undergraduate policy is not narrowly tailored. The ruling preserves some affirmative action while forbidding mechanical systems that treat race as an automatic admissions boost.
