Radio Act of 1927 establishes Federal Radio Commission

President Calvin Coolidge signs the Radio Act of 1927, establishing the Federal Radio Commission as the first federal agency to regulate radio broadcasting. The law requires broadcasters to serve "the public interest, convenience, or necessity" and grants the FRC power to grant and deny licenses, assign frequencies, and set power levels. The FRC acts as the predecessor to the FCC, addressing chaos in the radio spectrum caused by unlicensed stations and frequency conflicts.
