Gunman kills two Capitol Police officers inside U.S. Capitol

Russell Eugene Weston Jr. entered the U.S. Capitol and fatally shot Capitol Police Officer Jacob Chestnut and Detective John Gibson near an entrance used by members and staff. Weston had previously made threats involving federal officials; his motives were later tied to severe mental illness and anti-government delusions. The attack prompted Capitol security reforms and is included as politician-targeted institutional political violence because it targeted the seat of Congress.
