Cole Allen charged with attempted presidential assassination after WHCD shooting

Federal prosecutors charged Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, with four counts including attempting to assassinate a U.S. president after he opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 25, 2026. Allen ran through a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton carrying a long gun; a Secret Service officer was shot in the chest and survived because of a ballistic vest. Allen was subdued and taken into custody. He had sent family members a note describing himself as a "Friendly Federal Assassin."
