Study finds peaceful protests increase vote share while violence backfires

A peer-reviewed study published in the American Political Science Review analyzed protest outcomes from 2016 to 2024 and found that peaceful protests were associated with statistically significant increases in Democratic vote share in affected areas, while incidents of property destruction were associated with reduced vote share for protest-aligned candidates. The study provided empirical support for the strategic value of nonviolent protest and was widely cited in activist organizing debates.
