Supreme Court upholds Texas race-conscious admissions plan in Fisher II

The Supreme Court rules in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin on June 23, 2016, upholding the university's limited use of race in undergraduate admissions. Justice Anthony Kennedy writes the majority opinion. The Court says the university may consider race as one factor in a holistic process to pursue the educational benefits of diversity. The ruling follows years of litigation after the Court sent the case back in 2013. The decision temporarily reaffirms affirmative action in higher education before later challenges return to the Court.
