Trump Cuts 600 Weather Service Staff as Atlantic Hurricane Season Peaks
The Trump administration cut an additional 600 National Weather Service positions on July 23, 2025, bringing total NWS reductions to nearly 1,500 since January as the Atlantic hurricane season entered its most active phase. FEMA simultaneously operated with skeleton crews following earlier terminations of hundreds of emergency management personnel. Meteorologists warned that remaining staff could not adequately monitor multiple simultaneous storm systems.
