Senate Conservatives Demand Deeper Cuts to Pass Trump Tax and Spending Bill

A bloc of Senate conservatives threatened to block the Trump administration's flagship tax and spending legislation unless deeper cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and discretionary spending were added. The senators argued the House-passed version did not reduce the deficit sufficiently. Senate Majority Leader John Thune was working to negotiate a compromise before the bill reached the floor.
