Biden administration imposes sweeping semiconductor export controls on China most aggressive

The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security announces comprehensive new export controls barring the sale to China of advanced semiconductors, chipmaking equipment, and related software, including US-designed chips made in foreign factories. The rules require US citizens and permanent residents to obtain a license before supporting Chinese chip manufacturing operations, effectively forcing American engineers and technicians working at Chinese fabs to choose between their jobs and compliance with US law. Major chip companies including Nvidia, AMD, and Applied Materials face restrictions. Industry analysts call the rules the most sweeping US technology export controls since the Cold War, designed to freeze Chinese military and AI capabilities.
