AAUP censures Florida, Georgia, and other states for laws that undermine shared governance and academic freedom

The American Association of University Professors issued formal censures against several states and public university systems for adopting laws or policies that the AAUP found violated principles of shared governance and academic freedom, including Florida's Stop WOKE Act provisions, Georgia's post-tenure review changes, and related measures. AAUP censure is an advisory designation rather than a legally binding sanction, but it functions as a signal to the academic job market that an institution's conditions do not meet professional standards. Institutions under censure typically struggle to recruit senior faculty from peer institutions. The wave of censures documented how many state-level actions had simultaneously crossed AAUP's professional standards thresholds and illustrated the systematic nature of the legislative campaign.
