Fed Governor Cook's Lawyers Call Mortgage Fraud Allegations 'Baseless' in Letter to AG Bondi as Trump Seeks Her Firing
Lawyers for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi calling mortgage fraud allegations against Cook "baseless" and urging the DOJ to drop its inquiry. The allegations — made by HUD Director William Pulte in criminal referrals — claimed Cook committed fraud by listing two different properties as her "primary residence" on loan applications within weeks of each other. Cook's attorney Abbe Lowell argued one 2021 Atlanta property notation was an "isolated notation" that did not reflect intent to defraud. Trump used the allegations to justify firing Cook, the first attempted removal of a Fed governor in 112 years.
