Russian military intelligence hacks Democratic National Committee servers
Russian military intelligence agency GRU breaches Democratic National Committee computer systems and steals thousands of emails from Democratic officials. The hackers, known as Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear, spend weeks inside the network exfiltrating sensitive communications between party officials and Hillary Clinton campaign staff. The stolen emails later become public through WikiLeaks and other outlets, damaging Clinton campaign momentum weeks before the election. U.S. intelligence agencies later confirm the Russian government directed the operation to help Donald Trump defeat Clinton.
