Education Department cancels GEAR UP awards and proposes ending the program

The Trump administration's Department of Education cancelled at least one GEAR UP college preparation grant award and proposed eliminating both the GEAR UP and TRIO programs entirely in its budget submission. GEAR UP provides college readiness services to low-income middle and high school students, while TRIO supports first-generation college students. The proposed cuts would end federal support for college access programs serving approximately 800,000 students annually.
