Trump FY2027 budget eliminates LIHEAP, cuts EPA 52%, and sets $1.5T defense plan

The White House released its FY2027 budget request on April 3, proposing a $1.5 trillion defense budget described as the largest in US history. The proposal eliminates the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which Congress had funded at $4.045 billion for FY2026 despite Trump proposing its elimination the prior year. The EPA budget would be cut 52% to its lowest level since the Reagan era, dropping $4.6 billion in research, environmental justice, Superfund cleanup, and state grants. NIH and NSF also faced deep cuts in the science funding portfolio.
