DOJ Opens Criminal Investigation into Gov. Walz and Mayor Frey for Alleged Immigration Obstruction

The Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and AG Keith Ellison for alleged conspiracy to impede federal immigration agents under 18 U.S.C. § 372—the same statute used against Jan. 6 rioters. DOJ issued subpoenas to all three plus St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her and two counties. Walz called it "political theater"; legal experts warned that criminalizing criticism of enforcement would be unconstitutional.
