Homeland Security shuts down after Democrats block ICE reform-free funding bill
The Department of Homeland Security entered a partial shutdown after Senate Democrats blocked the House-passed continuing resolution for the fifth time since the funding deadline expired. Approximately 90,000 non-essential DHS employees were furloughed while essential law enforcement functions, including ICE deportation operations and border security, were designated essential and continued. The shutdown stretched into the longest partial DHS shutdown in U.S. history as Senate Democrats held the line demanding judicial warrant requirements for ICE home entries.
