State Dept begins proactive passport revocations for 2,700 child support debtors

Secretary of State Marco Rubio's department began proactively revoking passports on May 8, 2026, from approximately 2,700 parents owing $100,000 or more in unpaid child support. Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar announced the expansion on May 7, describing it as the first phase of a program that will eventually reach all parents owing more than $2,500 — the statutory minimum set in 2006. For the first time in the program's 28-year history, HHS submitted the complete delinquency list to the State Department proactively rather than waiting for passport renewal applications.
