Construction Begins on UAE Barakah Nuclear Power Plant

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and the Korea Electric Power Corporation consortium broke ground on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi, the first commercial nuclear plant in the Arab world. The four-unit APR-1400 reactor complex was contracted for $20 billion, making it the largest nuclear construction project in the world at that time. The project was built on the Gulf coast approximately 280 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi city, in a seismically stable area selected after a five-year site survey.
