US and allies attribute SolarWinds hack to Russia SVR intelligence service

The Biden administration, joined by NATO, the EU, the UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, and New Zealand, formally attributes the 2020 SolarWinds cyberespionage campaign to Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). The hack compromised nine federal agencies including the Treasury and Commerce departments, plus approximately 100 private-sector companies, through a trojanized update to SolarWinds' Orion IT management software. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan calls it the most sophisticated nation-state cyber operation ever conducted against the US government. The formal attribution allows the administration to coordinate allied responses and codify accountability. Russia denies involvement.
