Alabama SB 129 prohibits DEI offices and divisive-concepts programming at public colleges

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 129, which prohibited public colleges and universities from maintaining diversity, equity, and inclusion offices, using state funds for DEI programs, requiring DEI training as a condition of employment or enrollment, or sponsoring programming that promoted divisive concepts about race, sex, or national origin. The law gave the state board of education authority to investigate complaints and withhold funding from institutions that failed to comply. Faculty at Alabama's public universities immediately began receiving guidance from campus lawyers about which activities fell within the law's prohibition.
