Supreme Court strikes down ATF bump stock rule in Cargill v. Garland

In Garland v. Cargill, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the ATF exceeded its authority by classifying bump stocks as "machineguns." The Court held that a semiautomatic rifle with a bump stock cannot fire more than one shot per single trigger function, so it doesn't meet the federal machinegun definition. Justice Thomas delivered the majority opinion, joined by Alito, Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. (Supreme Court, June 14, 2024)
