Biden authorizes Ukraine to fire US long-range ATACMS missiles into Russian territory

President Biden authorizes Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles to strike targets inside Russian territory, a reversal of the longstanding U.S. policy against allowing such strikes. The authorization comes after intelligence confirms that North Korea has deployed approximately 10,000 troops to Russia to help fight in the Ukraine war. Biden makes the decision in the final months of his presidency, over objections from those warning of escalation. Ukraine uses the missiles to strike a military facility in Russia's Kursk Oblast within days. Russia responds by lowering its nuclear threshold.
