Trump Treasury shuts down IRS Direct File free tax filing program
The Treasury Department announced suspension of IRS Direct File in a report released November 5, 2025, citing $41 million in operating costs and lower-than-expected uptake. The program, which had 94% user satisfaction, will not be available for the 2026 filing season. The shutdown came after lobbying by commercial tax preparers Intuit and H&R Block, and after the Trump administration cut Direct File staff by 80% earlier in 2025.
