Education Department revokes waivers allowing California and Oregon colleges to use federal funds for undocumented students

The Department of Education revoked waivers that had allowed California and Oregon colleges participating in a federal pilot program to use a portion of their federal financial aid allocation to serve undocumented students. The revocation ended arrangements that institutions had relied on to provide financial support to DACA recipients and other students without legal immigration status who were otherwise ineligible for federal financial aid. The department's announcement framed the revocation as enforcing compliance with federal immigration law. Affected institutions immediately faced questions about how to fund support for students who had planned their enrollment around available aid. The action extended the administration's ideological enforcement campaign beyond DEI programming into student-service arrangements linked to immigration policy.
