Armed militiamen storm Michigan State Capitol, menace lawmakers after Trump liberate tweets
On April 30, 2020, hundreds of armed right-wing protesters, many carrying semi-automatic rifles and wearing body armor and camouflage, stormed the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing to protest Governor Gretchen Whitmer's COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Militia members pushed into the building, and a group armed with semi-automatic rifles entered the Senate gallery and confronted lawmakers. They yelled at legislators from the gallery and demanded access to the House floor. Michigan State Police stood by as armed protesters intimidated elected officials. The storming came 13 days after Trump tweeted "LIBERATE MICHIGAN!" and 6 months before a militia plot to kidnap and murder Whitmer was foiled by the FBI. Legislators required armed police escorts to enter and exit the building.
