FDA approves mifepristone for medication abortion with strict dispensing rules

The FDA approved mifepristone (brand name Mifeprex) for medication abortion through the first seven weeks of pregnancy, making the U.S. the 13th country to approve the drug. Under political pressure, the FDA imposed unusual restrictions requiring in-person dispensing by registered physicians only, with three required office visits. Retail pharmacies were prohibited from stocking the drug.
