Senate confirms Ketanji Brown Jackson as first Black woman on Supreme Court 53-47 vote
The Senate confirms Ketanji Brown Jackson as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by a vote of 53-47, making her the first Black woman in the 233-year history of the Supreme Court. Three Republican senators, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Mitt Romney, vote for confirmation. Biden had promised during the 2020 campaign to nominate a Black woman to the first Supreme Court vacancy. Jackson, a former federal public defender and Harvard Law graduate, replaces retiring Justice Stephen Breyer. Vice President Harris presides over the Senate vote. Jackson replaces the seat held by the Court's most liberal member but does not change the Court's 6-3 conservative majority.
