Abbott signs SB 14, making Texas the largest state to ban gender-affirming care for minors

Governor Greg Abbott signed Texas Senate Bill 14 on June 2, 2023, making Texas — the second-most populous state — the largest state to ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. SB14 prohibited physicians from prescribing puberty blockers or hormone therapy to minors for gender dysphoria and required patients already receiving treatment to be weaned off in a medically supervised manner. The law took effect September 1, 2023, after a temporary court injunction was lifted by the Texas Supreme Court.
