Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 Lowers Child Support Passport Threshold to $2,500

President George W. Bush signed the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 on February 8, 2006. The law lowered the child support debt threshold for passport denial from $5,000 to $2,500 and explicitly added passport revocation authority for parents who already held passports. The change tripled the number of parents potentially subject to the program and gave the State Department clearer authority to act against existing passport holders, not just applicants.
