FCC Chairman Ajit Pai unveils plan to roll back net neutrality rules

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, appointed by President Donald Trump, announces his plan to begin rolling back the 2015 net neutrality rules. Pai, a Republican, characterizes the Title II classification as a "mistake" that has "depressed investment" and "deterred innovation." He proposes returning to the pre-2015 light-touch framework, arguing "nothing about the internet was broken in 2015. It was all about politics." Pai claims the rules have reduced broadband infrastructure investment and prevented deployment to rural and low-income areas. The announcement sets off a major policy battle with supporters of net neutrality and establishes the political divide that will define internet policy for the remainder of the Trump administration.
