FCC adopts Fairness Doctrine requiring balanced broadcast coverage
The Federal Communications Commission adopts the Fairness Doctrine through the report "In the Matter of Editorializing by Broadcast Licensees." The doctrine requires licensed radio and television broadcasters to present fair and balanced coverage of controversial issues of public importance and provide reasonable opportunity for discussion of conflicting views. The policy stems from the Communications Act of 1934 requirement that broadcasters operate in the "public interest." Violation risks license denial or revocation.
