Carter Signs Department of Energy Organization Act

President Carter signed the Department of Energy Organization Act, consolidating more than 30 separate energy functions across federal agencies into a single cabinet-level department. James Schlesinger was appointed the first Secretary of Energy the next day. The Department officially activated October 1, 1977, absorbing the Energy Research and Development Administration, the Federal Energy Administration, and the Federal Power Commission.
