HUD emergency housing voucher program to run out of funding by end of 2026

HUD confirmed that the Emergency Housing Voucher program — funded by a fixed $5 billion ARPA appropriation — would exhaust its funds between November and December 2026, four years earlier than projected at the program's 2021 launch. Rising rents, which increased 22% between April 2021 and April 2023, depleted the fixed pot faster than anticipated. Without new congressional appropriations, approximately 59,000 households — including domestic violence survivors, people experiencing homelessness, and foster youth aging out of care — would lose rental assistance.
