Jan. 6 Select Committee subpoenas Steve Bannon Bannon defies it and is later convicted of contempt
The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, created in June 2021 and chaired by Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), issues a subpoena to Trump adviser Steve Bannon for documents and testimony. Bannon defies the subpoena citing executive privilege. The full House votes 229-202 to recommend criminal contempt charges. Bannon is indicted, tried, and convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress in July 2022, becoming the first person convicted on such charges in decades. The committee ultimately conducts more than 1,000 witness interviews over 18 months.
