Senate Republicans filibuster a bill that would require dark money donors to publicly identify themselves

Senate Republicans blocked the DISCLOSE Act on a 59-39 cloture vote, one vote short of the 60 needed to advance the legislation. House Democrats had passed the bill in June 2010 in direct response to Citizens United, which would have required corporations, unions, and 501(c)(4) groups spending on elections to disclose their donors. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell led the opposition, arguing that disclosure requirements violated First Amendment rights and amounted to unconstitutional compelled speech.
