Senate Democrats filibuster appropriations resolution over DACA protections government shuts down
On January 20, 2018, the federal government shuts down for 3 days as Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, filibuster Republican appropriations legislation. The shutdown stems from disagreements over immigration policy rather than spending levels. Democratic senators demand that any appropriations bill include protection for young immigrants covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and assurances against deportation for beneficiaries. Republicans, controlling both chambers, refuse to include DACA protections in the funding bill, arguing that immigration policy should be negotiated separately from appropriations. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell attempts to prevent Democratic input by refusing to consider bills without sufficient Republican votes. Approximately 692,900 federal employees are furloughed. However, most government departments continue functioning with minimal staffing disruption, and only about one-third of National Parks close.
