DOJ sues Idaho over voter rolls, expanding campaign to 30 states
The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division filed suit against Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane on April 1, 2026, after McGrane reversed a data-sharing agreement and refused to hand over voter registration records including partial Social Security and driver's license numbers. Idaho became the 30th state the DOJ targeted under NVRA and the Civil Rights Act of 1960. McGrane had signed a compliance agreement in fall 2025 but reversed course in February 2026 citing no clear legal duty.
