Trump Tells Four Congresswomen of Color to "Go Back" to Countries They Came From

President Trump tweets on July 14, 2019 that four progressive Democratic congresswomen — Ilhan Omar (Minnesota), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York), Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts), and Rashida Tlaib (Michigan) — should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." Three of the four were born in the United States; Omar was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen in 2000. All four are U.S. citizens. House Republicans block a Democratic resolution condemning the tweets. On July 17, at a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, the crowd chants "Send her back!" targeting Omar for more than 13 seconds as Trump pauses and watches. Trump initially distances himself from the chant before defending rally-goers as "incredible patriots." The phrase echoes 19th-century nativist slogans used to exclude and expel immigrants and people of color. Speaker Nancy Pelosi leads the House in formally condemning Trump's tweets as racist.
