Trump posts on Truth Social that Gen. Mark Milley committed treason punishment would have been DEATH
On September 22, 2023, former President Donald Trump posts on Truth Social: "This guy turned out to be a Woke train wreck who, if the Fake News reporting is correct, was actually dealing with China to give them a heads up on the thinking of the President of the United States. This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH! A war between China and the United States could have been the result of this treasonous act." The post targets Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, who is retiring, based on reports from journalist Bob Woodward's book that Milley had made back-channel communications with Chinese officials during the final months of Trump's administration to prevent accidental conflict. Gen. Milley says he takes "appropriate measures" to protect his family after Trump's post. Milley tells CBS 60 Minutes: "It's a free country." On September 29, Milley delivers a farewell address explicitly rebuking Trump without naming him, saying the U.S. military does not swear an oath to "a wannabe dictator." CNBC documents that Rep. Paul Gosar also reposted the sentiment, writing that Milley "committed treason." The post is the most explicit suggestion by a presidential candidate of executing a sitting military officer.
