Trump names Musk and Ramaswamy to lead Department of Government Efficiency
President-elect Trump announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would lead a new advisory body called the Department of Government Efficiency, charged with cutting federal regulations, programs, and staffing. Trump set a July 4, 2026 deadline and said the group would work "from outside" government in partnership with the Office of Management and Budget. The pick rewarded Musk's $277 million in 2024 election spending and gave the world's richest person direct influence over the agencies regulating his companies.
