Trump Calls for "Total and Complete Shutdown" of Muslim Immigration to the United States

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump issues a press release on December 7, 2015 — the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack — calling for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on." The statement follows the San Bernardino mass shooting by two Muslim attackers on December 2, 2015, which kills 14 people. Trump cites a disputed online poll to claim that 25 percent of Muslims believe violence against Americans is justified. The Anti-Defamation League condemns the proposal as "deeply offensive" and "contrary to American values." House Speaker Paul Ryan calls it "not what this party stands for." The proposal is legally challenged as unconstitutional religious discrimination under the First Amendment's Establishment Clause. Trump carries the proposal into office, enacting it as Executive Order 13769 in January 2017.
