FCC Chair Carr scraps net neutrality rules and ends federal broadband oversight
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr voted with the Republican majority to formally eliminate net neutrality rules, reclassifying broadband internet service from a Title II telecommunications service to a Title I information service. The reclassification removed the FCC's authority to prohibit internet service providers from blocking, throttling, or creating paid fast lanes for web traffic. Carr announced no future administration could restore net neutrality without congressional action, citing the Supreme Court's Loper Bright ruling limiting agency authority.
