Mamdani defeats Cuomo in NYC Democratic mayoral primary

State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary on June 24, 2025, winning 56.4% to 43.6% in the final round of ranked-choice voting. Mamdani, a democratic socialist backed by the DSA, ran on a platform of fare-free buses, universal child care, and a $30 minimum wage. The result ended Cuomo's political comeback attempt and set up a three-way general election against Republican Curtis Sliwa and independent Cuomo.
