Biden administration finalizes Title IX overhaul expanding LGBTQ+ student protections

The Biden administration releases its final rule overhauling Title IX regulations for the first time since the Obama era, reversing Trump-era changes that had narrowed protections for sexual assault survivors. The new rules expand protections against sex-based discrimination to cover gender identity and sexual orientation, require schools to respond promptly to all harassment complaints, and restore due process protections for both accusers and accused. Schools have until August 1, 2024 to comply. More than 230,000 public comments were received. The rules are immediately challenged by 26+ states in court. Federal judges block the rules in 14 states before they can take effect.
