DOJ announces dedicated domestic terrorism unit as ACLU prepares First Amendment challenges
Concurrent with the 2026 counterterrorism strategy release, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced a dedicated DOJ domestic terrorism unit focused on investigating violent left-wing extremist networks. FBI Director Kash Patel had characterized antifa and left-wing activism as equivalent to jihadist recruitment. The ACLU, which had filed over 200 legal actions against Trump administration policies with a 65% success rate, stated it was preparing First Amendment challenges to surveillance activities flowing from the strategy. A former senior DOJ official noted that about half of the National Security Division counterterrorism prosecutors had left since January 2025, reducing effective operational capacity despite the new unit.
