Congress Approves $45 Billion ICE Detention Expansion in One Big Beautiful Bill
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed by Congress on July 9-10, 2025, included $45 billion to expand ICE immigration detention capacity from approximately 41,000 beds to 100,000 beds nationwide. The 150 percent expansion would represent the largest single increase in U.S. detention infrastructure in history; civil liberties organizations including the ACLU and National Immigration Law Center filed legal challenges arguing the expansion would enable mass detention without adequate due process protections.
